Morocco Budget Travel Guide

morocsahara

Morocco is a North African country that has a coastline on both the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It has borders with Western Sahara to the south, Algeria to the east and the Spanish North African territories of Ceuta and Melilla on the Mediterranean coast in the north. It is just across the Strait of Gibraltar from Gibraltar.

Ethnically speaking, Morocco is composed mainly of Arabs and Berbers or a mixture of the two. Sizeable numbers of Berbers live mainly in the country’s mountainous regions, long areas of refuge where they have preserved their language and culture. Some segments of the population are descendants of refugees from Spain and Portugal who fled from the Reconquista, the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, that spanned until the 15th century.

Iceland is not a destination. It is an adventure!

iceland-1

Travel to Iceland to experience the stunning Icelandic nature, the beauty of the rugged landscape and the creativity of the Icelandic people. Come to Iceland to enjoy your vacation, or find the perfect setting for your conference or your incentive trip. Let Iceland be your inspiration.

A sparsely-populated North Atlantic island, Iceland is famous for its hot springs, geysers and active volcanoes. Lava fields cover much of the land and hot water is pumped from under the ground to supply much of the country’s heating.

Most of the population lives in the capital, Reykjavik, which runs on geothermal power and is home to the National and Saga museums, tracing Iceland’s Viking history.

It’s all Greek to TripHound…

santorini

Greece is a country in Southern Europe, on the southernmost tip of the Balkan peninsula, with extensive coastlines and islands in the Aegean, Ionian, and Mediterranean Seas. It shares borders in the north with Albania, the Republic of Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Turkey. It has an ancient culture that has had a significant influence on the arts, language, philosophy, politics, and sports of western society, including the genres of comedy and drama, western alphabets, Platonic ideals and the Socratic method, democracies and republics, and the Olympics. Furthermore it’s a geographically appealing place to visit, with a mountainous mainland and idyllic island beaches.

100 Best Things to do in France

eifltow

France is the number one tourist destination worldwide, and it is not difficult to see why. Quite apart from the diversity of its national monuments – many but by no means all of which are to be found in the capital city of Paris – it offers culture, tradition, fascinating history, romance and charm as well as fantastic cooking and first-rate wines.

It is interesting to note, when you are visiting France, that the French are extraordinarily nonchalant about the beauties and treasures in their wonderful country, almost as if they took them for granted. They live, eat and sleep with them in a completely different way to the rest of the world.

What’s Trending in Travel? Top Ten Destinations to Visit Now

Iceland_20170331_095013

If you’re thinking about how to spend precious vacation time, you might be wondering if there are interesting places that you should see before they change forever. Or, maybe you haven’t been to the world’s top vacation spots yet, and it’s past time to go. Here are ten suggestions for the top vacation packages that are trending now.

#1 Plan an Eco-Adventure in Costa Rica: Wild and green, the picturesque country of Costa Rica is one of the most ecologically sustainable nations in the world, and 25% of the land area there is protected. Rainforests, waterfalls, volcanoes and incredible beaches make this a fascinating vacation destination.

Travel Tip: Zip-lining through a rain forest canopy with monkeys and toucans is a thrill you’ll never forget.

#2 Quick, Book a Trip to Antarctica: There are many reasons to visit Antarctica now. This wild and remote land way down under is home to scientists, penguins and migrating marine mammals. Incredible seascapes, calving glaciers, hordes of seabirds and pristine, untouched ice islands all make for a fascinating cruise.

Travel Tip: Consider booking a luxury cruise. First class cuisine and spacious ocean view cabins make the rigors of the ice continent more bearable.

#3 Take a Trip to Middle Earth: New Zealand has been a trending travel destination since the filming of The Hobbit Trilogy and The Lord of the Rings movies. New Zealand’s soaring mountains, rolling hills and deep caves provided the setting for The Hobbit, and you can still visit movie sets that represented scenes in the Warner Brothers’ movies.

Travel Tip: If you’re going to visit Hobiton, near Matamata, be sure to swig a beer at The Green Dragon Inn.

#4 Spend a Week in the Riviera Maya: Mexico’s coastal vacation destination is home to all-inclusive seaside resorts that serve up impressive cuisine and luxurious spa treatments. Just once in your life (or more) treat yourself to a Riviera Maya all-inclusive resort where you can soak up the sun and study the art of relaxation.

Travel Tip: Plan your trip around the rainy season for guaranteed great weather. December through April is the best time to go.

#5 Go North, to Canada: With cheap gas prices, and a strong U.S. dollar, U.S. residents should pack up the car and head north. Canada is trending now partly because it has a special birthday coming up: The country is turning 150 on July 1. Celebrate with a train ride across the Rockies, a visit to the French city of Montreal or a drive through the fishing villages of the Maritimes.

Travel Tip: A passport is the recommended document for crossing into Canada, but an enhanced driver’s license will also work.

#6 May I Go to Cuba? Even though the embargo is still in place, you can visit this Caribbean island legally now. There are some nice resorts along the northeastern coast, which are available if you plan ahead. Havana is fun, full of music, antique cars and friendly people.

Travel Tip: If you go to Cuba with a tour group or on a cruise, the operator will take care of the required paperwork to make the trip legal.

#7 The Incredible Spectacle of Iceland: Sparsely populated, covered by glaciers, and bathed in the glow of the Northern lights, the nation of Iceland is a wonder of natural beauty. Visit black sand beaches with icebergs, see geysers, volcanoes and vast areas of lava covered by soft layers of moss. Many people here believe in elves, and I can see why. It’s the magic.

Travel Tip: Take some time to drive all 16 hours of the Ring Road. The 2-lane highway offers views of waterfalls, glaciers and highlands.

#8 Grab Some Southern Hospitality: The popularity of Savannah, and of its neighbor, Charleston SC, is due to its affinity with the American past. The allure of the antebellum south may have been based on myth, but the grace and elegance of the historic mansions of Savannah with their formal flower gardens, is unmistakable.

Travel Tip: Stay in a bed and breakfast in the historic district. You’ll be steeped in the culture and tradition of the Old South. (Not to mention the muffins.)

#9 Land of Luck & Leprechauns: Kiss the Blarney Stone, ride a bike atop the Cliffs of Moher, or spend an afternoon in a warm, friendly pub. Ireland is trending with low airfares and great vacation packages including escorted tours. You might even be able to sleep in a castle.

Travel Tip: Rent a car and drive along the Wild Atlantic Way. In spite of Ireland’s other attractions, this remains one of the best rated “things to do in Ireland.”

#10 All-Inclusive Island Paradise: We can’t leave you without suggesting an all-inclusive Caribbean vacation in Paradise. These wind-swept sandy islands, from the Bahamas to Aruba, offer some of the most popular and trendy travel destinations in the world. Prices in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are competitive, and the sun and sand are incomparable.

Travel Tip: Watch for discount prices on all-inclusives with airfare. You’ll be surprised at how little it costs to be pampered on a sun-drenched beach under a palm tree.

Lost and Found : A TripHound Story

dudefound4

January 17th 2015 began as any other day for Monya. She rose, dressed, let her male shih tzu “Dude” out, brought him back in and went to fight the traffic to work.  After a long day of work, Monya always looked forward to getting home to her love, Dude. She arrived home and as typical of a little shih tzu, his excitement of mama being home and wanting to go out!  He barreled past her as she opened the front door, however, this time he keeps running and doesn’t look back.

Monya could’t find him anywhere yet continues to exhaust every possibility. This little guy is her world and she knows she must find him. Adding to her stress is the chilly January weather and the hurrying darkness, she continues searching by car well after the cloak of night swallows her, but to no avail. Worn out, cold and trading frantic worry for deepening sadness, she finally returns home to her now empty house.

As we all must do in the wake of any tragedy, Monya plugs on in her daily life without her Dude. Extreme sadness due to loss does eventually fade but it never, ever actually departs. Several months later Monya takes on a rescue to sooth her aching heart a bit. The rescue is a nine week old female boxer and pit bull mix whom she affectionately names Dezyree, and calls Dez for short. (The name took on an extra special meaning when Monya’s favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys shone so brightly during the 2016 season!) While Dezyree filled her heart with love and her home with companionship, Monya still mourned her Dude, frequently wondering what had happened to him, praying he was still alive and well.

Time goes by, as it always does, and we find our story in February of 2017. Two years and counting without her sweet boy.  February 1st was a typical day at work that would turn out to be anything but typical. As her mind is occupied with a million random things, Monya is told she has a phone call.

“Hello” she says picking up the phone.

“Is this Monya, owner of a dog by the name of Dude, a male shih tzu?” the unknown voice replies.

“Yes, this is Monya but I no longer have that dog, he has been gone for two years.”

The caller, identifying himself as a volunteer from the Irving, TX Animal Care Campus and informs her that a couple has found her sweet guy and would like to bring him to her.

Surprised, shocked and not just a little overcome with emotion, Monya gives the caller her work address and the couple drives immediately to her. The scene that unfolded when the wife stepped out of the car with a shaking, terrified shih tzu named Dude was a tear-filled, yet joyous, one! The dog’s head was buried in the woman’s neck, so frightened, until he heard what must have been magic words to him- “your mommy is here”. He looks relieved and all but leaps into her arms! Having never licked her face in the past, Dude now proceeds to shower her with his love!

Monya is a close friend to one of our staff members here at TripHound and when he heard about her story he knew we could help! He took his good friend, and her Dude, to get him groomed, his shots up to date, and paid for him to be neutered as well. The result is a happy family increased by one and Dude and Dez, his new 70 lb. playmate, are acclimating nicely. And Dude never tries to run out the door anymore…

Best Friends NKLA initiative on target to create country’s largest no-kill community

NKLA-Tank-pit-bull-terrier-3286LF

I’m thrilled to be able to share with you the latest news from our program in Los Angeles. In 2016, the L.A. city shelters achieved a record save rate of 82.6 percent for all dogs and cats entering the city shelter system! This is a major improvement over the 57 percent save rate the city had before the launch of NKLA. Los Angeles is on track to realize its no-kill goal this year.

When Best Friends started the NKLA initiative in the country’s second largest city, the goal was to transform L.A. into No-Kill Los Angeles (NKLA) by saving at least 90 percent of the animals who enter the city’s six animal shelters. At that time in 2012, no-kill had already been achieved in smaller communities around the country, but quibbles concerning its viability remained. Some said the cities in which it was achieved had some unique characteristic that made it possible or they were small or wealthy or too cold to have a kitten season, or, or …

Best Friends knew that if we could demonstrate a successful no-kill model in a city as geographically large, populous and diverse as Los Angeles, then no city or jurisdiction could say, “It can’t happen here.”

Best Friends already had a no-kill coalition plan, based on our work in Utah, and we were only waiting for the right partner in Los Angeles to roll it out there. In 2010, with the hiring of Brenda Barnette as general manager of Los Angeles Animal Services, all of the necessary people were in place.

Brenda stepped into the general manager role in July of 2010. In December 2010, the first meeting of what would become the NKLA Steering Committee was held.

In 2011, Best Friends entered into a partnership with the City of Los Angeles to operate the city’s Northeast Valley Shelter, located in the Mission Hills area of L.A. It is a beautiful facility built by the city in 2007 with funds raised on a bond measure. After completion, the shelter had never opened to the public because of recession-related budget constraints that made it impossible for Los Angeles Animal Services to staff the new shelter. On January 1, 2012, the previously mothballed Mission Hills shelter opened to the public as the Best Friends Pet Adoption and Spay/Neuter Center.

Best Friends has always believed not only that through collaboration we can achieve the goal of ending the killing of healthy and treatable pets, but also that change created through collaboration is lasting. With more than 110 participating organizations in the NKLA coalition, we will continue working together to save as many lives as possible long after the 90 percent threshold for no-kill is achieved.

The results in Los Angeles are energizing and exciting, and we should take a moment to celebrate the progress and the fact that NKLA’s 2017 goal is within reach. But there is much more work to be done through the end of this year (and beyond).

If you’re in Southern California and want to be a part of this effort, please visit www.nkla.org to learn how you can help to turn Los Angeles into NKLA.

Together, we will Save Them All.

The Foundation church relocated animals from its Arizona ranch to property in Kanab, Utah, in 1984.In 1991, the church was renamed Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, which became a tax-exempt, nonprofit charity, and in 2003 renamed Best Friends Animal Society.

Venice: A City of Love

Venice, the capital of northern Italy’s Veneto region, is built on more than 100 small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. It has no roads, just canals – including the Grand Canal thoroughfare – lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces. The central square, Piazza San Marco, contains St. Mark’s Basilica, which is tiled with Byzantine mosaics, and the Campanile bell tower offering views of the city’s red roofs.
